Possum Kingdom Lake
Possum Kingdom is a very popular place for tourists, with many activities available year round. There are many different areas around the lake that you can really enjoy yourself while experiencing the beauty of the scenery and the wildlife. Possum Kingdom Lake is one of the clearest lakes in all of Texas; because of this the lake is now a favorite place for scuba diving and boating. Possum Kingdom Lake is only a short drive from Dallas, Ft. Worth, Wichita Falls and Abilene, Texas. It is located just off interstate 20 and is less than 100 miles away from DFW Airport making it a perfect location for weekend getaways.
Events
Fishing - PK offers a diverse natural habitat, from rocky bluffs and underwater ledges to shallow flats. Popular species include largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, white bass, spotted bass, crappie, bream, blue and flathead catfish. Try your skills at a Public Fishing Pier.
Hiking - The rolling hills that surround Possum Kingdom Lake are ideal terrain for both casual and serious hikers and bikers. Numerous trails, offer refreshing views of beautiful Possum Kingdom lake. The recently completed 16 mile hike and bike trail is located right across from Bonita Shores. This trail offers several trailheads with restrooms and public parking. The trail also provides access to the top of a 90’ high peak that has an outstanding view of the lake. The trail winds through wooded areas, limestone canyons and the trails peak more than 350 feet above the lake. The trail system was designed to allow the habitat to remain untouched outside of the marked trail, so visitors will enjoy wilderness as it is native to the PK area.
Canoeing - The Brazos River below Morris Sheppard dam is a favorite for canoeing. Generally regarded as one of the most scenic stretches of the Brazos River in North Texas, the 20 mile section between Texas Hwy 16 and Hwy 4 in Palo Pinto County snakes its way from the Possum Kingdom dam down through the rough low mountains into the scenic countryside. The 20-mile section below Possum Kingdom is a scenic treasure with towering cliffs and limestone boulders landscaped with cottonwoods, oaks, mesquites, cedars, willows, pecans and grapevines along the river that usually is very clear. Golf - The Cliffs golf course consistently maintains its status as one of the most spectacular courses in the state of Texas. The course is sculptured into the flow of the unique West Texas terrain, each hole at The Cliffs uses the natural landscape to create an unforgettable course. Some holes offer wide stretches of land but ravines, rock outcroppings, cedar groves and a mixture of native grasses border the fairway on others.
